Ice fishing update in the Binghamton NY area.

January 4

Ice and cold weather has come very early this year. The Susquehanna River is a hot bed for walleye fishing and one of the best fisheries for them in NYS. The action started of hot and heavy in the Nichols area of the river but has tapered off in the last two weeks. Some really nice catches have been coming from the Owego section in the evening sessions but the morning bite has been non existent. As always be exceedingly careful on river ice and in particular first and last ice. This year was unusual in that we went from warm to frigid in a matter of days and with a lot of rain then. Even though it was very cold and ice formed appreciate that it takes awhile for the ground water to cool down and allow for the formation of good thick ice. A good spud bar and a friend are a great idea unless you are very experienced on the river. A perch Rapalla has been the hot weapon recently but the bite has been short in duration and right at dark.
